The ZrB2–SiC phase and structure formation during hot pressing of ZrC, Si, B4C and ZrB2 powder mixtures at 1800°С and 27 MPa for 5 min is investigated. Content of SiC in sintered materials reaches 50% vol. As shown, the material consolidation process strongly determined by physicochemical transformations during the sintering. Composite shrinkage passes through several stages, which correspond to certain reactions with formation of intermediate (ZrSi2) and final (ZrB2 and SiC) phases.
Key words: ceramics, zirconium diboride, reaction sintering, kinetic curve.
