The ZrB$_2$–SiC phase and structure formation during hot pressing of ZrC, Si, B4C and ZrB$_2$ powder mixtures at 1800°С and 27 MPa for 5 min is investigated. Content of SiC in sintered materials reaches 50% vol. As shown, the material consolidation process strongly determined by physicochemical transformations during the sintering. Composite shrinkage passes through several stages, which correspond to certain reactions with formation of intermediate (ZrSi$_2$) and final (ZrB$_2$ and SiC) phases.
Key words: ceramics, zirconium diboride, reaction sintering, kinetic curve.
